Board Meeting September 11

You recently received the Board agenda for the upcoming Board meeting from our Board President Leslie Thomas. Please take a moment to peruse it and consider attending. To quote Leslie, “Becoming an active and involved participant in your children’s education through volunteer opportunities, attendance at activities and events, and participation during the monthly Board meetings, are all great ways to enrich your families’ experience at Bloomington Montessori School.”

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teachers, a Board member, your Parent Ambassador, or any of the administrative staff when you have thoughts, questions, concerns, joys, and funny stories (we love those!). We are happy to hear from you.

Box Tops for Education

Help raise funds for the school through the Box Tops for Education program:

  • Visit BTFE.com for a complete list of Box Tops products. New products are added regularly! You can register to receive extra coupons and opportunities to earn Box Tops as well.
  • Download the Box Tops for Education™ Bonus App. The app provides offers for Bonus Box Tops on specific products. All you have to do is check the offers and scan your receipt if you qualify. There are often amazing offers!
  • Encourage family, friends, neighbors, or coworkers to help you collect Box Tops. Grandparents are an excellent source!

Drop off Box Tops at school at any time. We will have two collection due dates for Box Tops this school year, which we will post as we get closer. Many BMS classrooms have a Box Tops drop-off spot located near the classroom door, or you can use the collection box in the main office. Watch your parent pocket for more details.

 Mabel’s Labels

Label all your family’s gear, your canned goods, and your child’s school items, AND raise money for the school. Shipping is free in the US and the percentage of your purchase coming back to the school is 20%. This is a huge percentage, as these things go.

Visit campaigns.mabelslabels.com. Click “Support a Fundraiser.” Select “Bloomington Montessori School (IN)” and off you go.

This is an ongoing fundraiser, so there is no deadline other than your own desire to prevent another lost water bottle or mitten. Happy labeling!

Kroger Community Rewards Program

We have a new number: SG291

If you are already enrolled in the program, please double-check to see that you are properly enrolled: https://www.kroger.com/account/enrollCommunityRewardsNow/

If you are not enrolled, please visit: https://www.kroger.com/account/enrollCommunityRewardsNow/

Families have raised as much as $3,200 in one quarter for the school. Anyone who shops at Kroger can join in the fun. My parents live in IL and can help when they shop at their local Kroger store. We currently have 125 households enrolled—are you?

We also have grocery cards for Lucky’s and Bloomingfoods. Please visit the front desk to purchase.

And remember, you can earn Parent Volunteer hours for this—4 hours for participating in the Kroger Rewards program. So, if your parents join, and you join, that’s 8 hours, and if you came to Fall Beautification, that’s at least two hours, making 10 hours—wow, you’re done!

Food Drive to Benefit MCUM

Thank you to everyone who joined in the recent food drive. Collectively we donated 370 lbs. of food! It is a generous amount that will go a long way toward helping provide food to local children and families in need.

Sycamore students unload food at MCUM.

Book Sale Extended

The book sale has been extended through next Thursday, so please stop by and browse the many wonderful books, puzzles and games on offer. If you don’t see a book that suits your library, monetary donations are also welcome.

Volunteers for next week are still needed. Please text Melissa Arias Shah at 305.726.5691. Your time counts toward your parent volunteer hours.

This is an excellent way to show our support for the faculty and staff who work so hard on behalf of the students, while doing a bit of spring cleaning. Thank you for your donations!

In December we raised over $190. Let’s see if we can raise even more this time.

What is the Good of All This Fundraising?

  • It supports the ongoing training of our faculty, from Montessori certification to honing skills and staying current with developments in educational theory and advances in childhood development.
  • It has supported a new school management system, which will improve the enrollment and communication processes, among others.
  • It will upgrade the school’s ethernet cable system and improve Wi-Fi accessibility in classrooms.
  • It will purchase new or updated materials for all classrooms, such as new wooden puzzle maps for the lower elementary classrooms, which currently date from before the fall of the Berlin Wall and the break-up of the Soviet Union. Excellent for history, but not great for current geography.
  •  It will help support Beautification Weekend coming up this fall—mark your calendars for August 5th and 6th, and stay tuned!

Forty Days of Peace Concludes

“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” –Barak Obama

On Friday the students and faculty celebrated the conclusion of the Forty Days of Peace, honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. All the children and faculty assembled in the Commons to sing songs of peace and share quotes from individuals around the world who have worked to make the world a more peaceful place for everyone. It was a moving and inspiring event—I think there were even a few tears. Photos to come.

“It isn’t enough to talk about peace; one must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it; one must work at it.” –Eleanor Roosevelt

Helping Out at the Boys & Girls Club

“This country will not be a good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a good place for all of us to live in.” –Theodore Roosevelt

Friday was a busy day for many at BMS. In addition to the MLK assembly, families also cooked and served dinner for the kids attending the afterschool program at the Crestmont Boys & Girls Club. Thank you to all of you who helped—the food looked delicious, and there were ample leftovers to send home to feed hungry children over the weekend! March 30 is our next date to help, so mark your calendars, preschool families.

Below are the happy faces of the crew serving dinner.

Parent Forum: Parent/Child Communication

March 7, 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm

Dinner and childcare provided

Our next Parent Forum will be on March 7. After polling the parent community, we found that the topic of “Parent/Child Communication” receive the most interest, so we have arranged for Amy Makice, LCSW, founder of the Bloomington Center for Connection, to join us for an evening discussing, well, parent/child communication. Amy is a parent educator and licensed psychotherapist based in Bloomington. Her workshops and presentations incorporate current research on children’s development, neuroscience, psychotherapy and play therapy as well as concrete techniques. Amy has been a licensed clinical social worker since 1997 and has three children of her own with whom she tries to communicate. And she’s smiling!

The forum, suitable for parents with children of any age, will be as much discussion as presentation, so come with your questions.

We will again be providing a light dinner of soup, bread, fruit and the ubiquitous carrots, as well as child care. Please sign up on the sheets in both buildings or send me an email about whether you are joining the group for dinner and whether you need childcare, along with the age(s) of your child(ren).  We look forward to seeing you!
