Forty Days of Peace

We are excited to begin soon our annual Forty Days of Peace Celebration in honor of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Beginning on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the classrooms will mark forty consecutive days on which teachers will suggest an Act of Peace through which children can honor Dr. King’s legacy. The teachers will also share with children a daily quote from a world peacemaker. Each class will have a presentation by the City of Bloomington on the life of Dr. King, and our Forty Days will culminate in early March with a student celebration in Dr. King’s honor.

We hope you can continue this celebration at home on days when school is not in session, and so for inspiration the newsletter will offer quotes and acts of peace for you. It is an exciting and necessary celebration, and seems never to lose relevance. Join us!

Sycamore takes on the SNAP Challenge

This month the Sycamore students tackled the challenge of providing nutritious meals while living on a SNAP budget (food stamps). The children learned first about the Harvard MyPlate nutrition guidelines and then in small groups planned a week’s menu on a SNAP budget, which is $34 to $38 per week per person. Each group chose one recipe or dish from their menu to prepare for the class as a snack, and made trips to Kroger to learn about brand comparison and nutrition labeling, and how to figuring price per oz. in order to shop within their budget.

Many thanks to Sycamore teacher Kellie Allin for all the planning, organizing, shepherding of children through Kroger, and overseeing the food prep and cooking!

From the BMS Kitchen—Living Lightly on the Planet (Kelsey Smith)

All of the students at BMS learn about the BMS shared values of social responsibility, global citizenship and stewardship of the Earth. In keeping with these values, I am always looking to lower our carbon footprint in the kitchen. Below are a few ways we do this on a daily basis:

  • Composting raw food waste
  • Serving vegetarian menus twice a week
  • Buying organic produce whenever possible
  • Recycling all aluminum, plastic and carboard
  • Taking plastic bags to Kroger for recycling
  • Using washable trays, napkins, cups and silverware

How does your family live lightly on the planet? Let us know—perhaps BMS can do that, too!

Re-Enrollment Season Begins in January

Watch this newsletter and your email for information about meetings and due dates, all of which are very important.

Remember to Give

To BMS and to the many charities in Bloomington and elsewhere. Hoosier Hills Food Bank, in particular, is low on food.

Our goal at BMS is $50,000—with your help we can do it!

Your annual fund gifts support purchases of classroom materials, improvements to the play yards, professional development for faculty, and many of the other costs that tuition alone does not cover—we keep tuition as low as possible so that a Montessori education is as affordable as possible.

Thank you for your generosity.

AMS Accreditation Update

BMS has been working steadily toward Full Accreditation from the American Montessori Society. This process has involved a great deal of work on the part of the faculty, Director of Montessori Programs, Board members and other staff, and we are excited to announce that BMS has completed Step 9 of this process, with the final step being full accreditation. Congratulations to all who have worked so hard!

We are planning to undertake the final stage in the process next year, which will involve site visits from AMS accreditors as well as lots and lots of forms. Watch this newsletter for updates.

 Wheeler Mission Share Closet Complete!

Wheeler Mission 2018

The Sycamore class has finished installing and stocking the shelves at Wheeler Mission, transforming a portion of the building to a little “shop” that provides the women, children and men who are using the temporary shelter with clothing, shoes, winter wear and other essential items. All the students worked very hard and enthusiastically, both in class and at Wheeler Mission, planning, organizing, assembling shelves, and making wonderful art for the walls of the shop.

The Sycamore Class continues to accept donations of gloves, hats, socks, and coats in women’s, men’s, and all children’s sizes. If you would like to donate, please send clothing here until November 16th and place in the collection bins of each building.

Thank you to all who donated items, chaperoned, and otherwise supported the project!

Winter Clothing Drive

BMS Families, is your closet getting cluttered with old clothing? You could donate it to the Sycamore Winter Clothing Drive if you want to help people in need!

The Wheeler Mission Center for Women and Children is a shelter for people without homes. They provide food, beds, and other needs. Currently, we are partnering with them to make a little “shop” inside the building to provide people with clothing. The Sycamore Class is helping build the shelving and organize the Share Closet and is also holding a drive to collect winter clothing donations. We are accepting donations of gloves, hats, socks, and coats in women’s, men’s, and all children’s sizes. If you would like to donate, please send clothing here between October 15th and November 16th and place in the collection bins of each building.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

The Sycamore Students
