Forty Days of Peace Concludes

“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” –Barak Obama

On Friday the students and faculty celebrated the conclusion of the Forty Days of Peace, honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. All the children and faculty assembled in the Commons to sing songs of peace and share quotes from individuals around the world who have worked to make the world a more peaceful place for everyone. It was a moving and inspiring event—I think there were even a few tears. Photos to come.

“It isn’t enough to talk about peace; one must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it; one must work at it.” –Eleanor Roosevelt

Helping Out at the Boys & Girls Club

“This country will not be a good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a good place for all of us to live in.” –Theodore Roosevelt

Friday was a busy day for many at BMS. In addition to the MLK assembly, families also cooked and served dinner for the kids attending the afterschool program at the Crestmont Boys & Girls Club. Thank you to all of you who helped—the food looked delicious, and there were ample leftovers to send home to feed hungry children over the weekend! March 30 is our next date to help, so mark your calendars, preschool families.

Below are the happy faces of the crew serving dinner.

Parent Forum: Parent/Child Communication

March 7, 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm

Dinner and childcare provided

Our next Parent Forum will be on March 7. After polling the parent community, we found that the topic of “Parent/Child Communication” receive the most interest, so we have arranged for Amy Makice, LCSW, founder of the Bloomington Center for Connection, to join us for an evening discussing, well, parent/child communication. Amy is a parent educator and licensed psychotherapist based in Bloomington. Her workshops and presentations incorporate current research on children’s development, neuroscience, psychotherapy and play therapy as well as concrete techniques. Amy has been a licensed clinical social worker since 1997 and has three children of her own with whom she tries to communicate. And she’s smiling!

The forum, suitable for parents with children of any age, will be as much discussion as presentation, so come with your questions.

We will again be providing a light dinner of soup, bread, fruit and the ubiquitous carrots, as well as child care. Please sign up on the sheets in both buildings or send me an email about whether you are joining the group for dinner and whether you need childcare, along with the age(s) of your child(ren).  We look forward to seeing you!

Sycamore Class Play—“The Comedy of Errors

The Sycamore class has been in tech rehearsal all day today, preparing for this Sunday’s 2 pm performance at the Monroe County Public Library. Interesting factoids:The Comedy of Errors, Shakespeare’s shortest play, is one of two of his plays that observe Aristotle’s Unity of Time, a.k.a. it all takes place in 24 hours (H.Bloom, Wikipedia). One wonders what made Aristotle think this needed to be a rule for drama. Do you know?

The students have been working hard and are excited–come enjoy their performance!

Chipotle Fundraiser

Feb. 24

4:00 to 8:00 pm

2894 East 3rd Street

Bring the flyer to show the cashier and Chipotle will donate to BMS 50% of all sales to individuals who show the flyer, either a hard copy or on your phone. Flyer attached, and available on our website and Facebook pages.

Up next, Pizza X, Mondays in March! And remember, you can buy a good-for-the-planet BMS grocery bag, with nifty pencil holder in the handle.

Annual Fund Donations at Work

The donations you make to the Annual Fund each year make a major impact on the school and the education of your child. Used where they are most needed, your gifts support the work of our children as they become empowered, life-long learners.

We have finally learned that our event at Panera brought in nearly $200 for the school, which is 15% of the dollars spent on food by those who showed the cashier our flyer.

Our next event, at Chipotle, will bring the school a return of 50%, so mark your calendars and spread the word and the flyer.

Remember, your annual fund contributions help support the ongoing training and professional development of our faculty. Each year the school spends $8,000 to $13,000 on these activities. Faculty complete certifications, update existing certifications, and attend national and regional conferences and workshops. This ensures your children are receiving the highest quality education we can provide.

Thank you, again, for your ongoing generosity and enthusiasm for supporting your child’s education!

Annual Fund Donations at Work

The donations you make to the Annual Fund each year make a major impact on the school and the education of your child. Used where they are most needed, your gifts support the work of our children as they become empowered, life-long learners.

A few examples:

Training and Professional Development—Each year the school spends $8,000 to $13,000 on the ongoing Montessori training and professional development of Lead teachers and staff. Faculty complete certifications, update existing certifications, and attend national and regional conferences and workshops. This ensures your children are receiving the highest quality education we can provide.

Technology—Technology constantly requires upgrades and improvement. This year so far, we have:

  • upgraded the wireless access points for the Sycamore 9-to-12 classroom, and
  • purchased a new School Administration Software package, which will allow for smoother enrollment processes and new online capabilities for forms and information updating, among other exciting data management solutions. Thanks for your patience with us while we learn how to make your lives better!

Classroom Improvements—The annual fund helps support the $4,200 allocated per classroom for new and upgraded Montessori materials, supplies and equipment. Annually, that totals over $25,000 needed to maintain the harmonious, child-centered learning environments in which our children grow and thrive.

Thank you, again, for your ongoing generosity and enthusiasm for supporting your child’s education.

40 Days of Peace

We are looking forward to our 40 Days of Peace Celebration in honor of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Beginning on (last) Monday, which is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we will have 40 consecutive days on which we will suggest an Act of Peace with which children can honor Dr. King’s legacy. We will also share a daily quote by a world peacemaker with the children. We hope you can continue this at home on weekends and holidays. Attached is a .pdf file which details these suggested items. If you would like to support the school with this, you might want to print a copy and post it in a common area at home to prompt discussion and acts of peace within your household. Each class will have a presentation by the City of Bloomington on the life of Dr. King, as well. Our 40 Days will culminate on Friday, February 23rd with a student celebration in Dr. King’s honor.
Thanks for your support!
